Members of the\u00a0prog rock band Yes<\/strong> are being sued over a song that appeared on their 2021 album,\u00a0<\/span>The Quest<\/span><\/em>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Riz Story<\/strong>, whose legal name is Rudolph Zahler<\/strong>, filed a copyright suit in Los Angeles claiming Yes guitarist Steve Howe<\/strong> and Jon Davison<\/strong>, the band\u2019s lead singer since 2012, stole the music of his song \u201cReunion\u201d for the track \u201c<\/span>Dare To Know<\/strong><\/span><\/a>,\u201d adding their own lyrics.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the court documents, Story says he wrote the music for \u201cReunion\u201d around 1981 when he was just 15, and while it was never released as a single, it was used in the 2014 movie <\/span>A Winter Rose<\/span><\/em>, and he subsequently copyrighted the song.<\/span><\/p>\n

He\u00a0says in 2022 he discovered his music being used in “Dare To Know,\u201d insisting he\u00a0didn’t give them permission, and contending they violated his copyright by performing the tune and using it to promote their album.<\/span><\/p>\n

As for how Howe heard the song, Story says\u00a0it was through <\/span>his<\/span><\/em> relationship\u00a0with Davison. They’ve known each other since being introduced by the late Foo Fighters<\/strong> drummer Taylor Hawkins <\/strong>around 1990.\u00a0All three were in the band Anyone<\/strong> together.<\/span><\/p>\n

Story also claims Davison once asked for help\u00a0co-writing songs for Yes because \u201che didn\u2019t think he was up to writing songs of a caliber\u201d the band would expect, but\u00a0Story refused. He says instead Davison opted to \u201csteal\u201d the song \u201cReunion,\u201d giving songwriting credit to Howe on the album.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The suit also notes that Story has hired a musicologist who insists the two songs have \u201ca pitch similarity percentage of 96%, which is extremely high.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Story is suing for monetary damages, and wants an injunction forcing Yes to stop distributing the song and\u00a0to give him sole songwriting credit for the music of \u201cDare to Know.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
