The Village People<\/strong>\u2019s Victor Willis<\/strong> wants everyone to know the band\u2019s classic song \u201cY.M.C.A.\u201d is not a gay anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a post on <\/span>Facebook<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Willis addressed President-elect Donald Trump<\/strong>\u2019s use of the song at rallies and any suggestion that it’s strange he’d use a gay anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n

Willis\u00a0notes that he let\u00a0Trump use the song\u00a0because he seemed to “genuinely like Y.M.C.A. and he\u2019s having a lot of fun with it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

“As such, I simply didn\u2019t have the heart to prevent his continued use of my song in the face of so many artists withdrawing his use of their material,”\u00a0Willis adds, noting\u00a0the song has \u201cbenefited greatly\u201d from Trump\u2019s use, particularly financially\u00a0\u2014 the tune has grossed \u201cseveral million dollars.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

But then Willis addressed the suggestion that the\u00a01978 disco track is a gay anthem.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAs I\u2019ve said numerous times in the past, that is a false assumption based on the fact that my writing partner was gay, and some (not all) of Village People were gay, and that the first Village People album was totally about gay life,\u201d he writes. \u201cThis assumption is also based on the fact that the YMCA was apparently being used as some sort of gay hangout and since one of the writers was gay and some of the Village People are gay, the song must be a message to gay people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cTo that I say once again, get your minds out of the gutter. It is not.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe true anthem is Y.M.C.A.\u2019s appeal to people of all strips including President Elect Trump,” Willis writes. “But the song is not really a gay anthem other than certain people falsely suggesting that it is. And this must stop because it is damaging to the song.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
