Grateful Dead<\/strong>, who\u2019ll receive the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday, have a long history of philanthropy, and in a new interview with <\/span>Billboard<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> <\/span><\/em>they talk about their motivation\u00a0for giving back to the public.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re part of a community, and so the better the community is doing, the better we\u2019re doing,\u201d Bobby Weir<\/strong> says of their mission to help, noting\u00a0that the late\u00a0Jerry Garcia<\/strong>\u00a0\u201calways used to say, \u2018You get some, you give some back.\u2019 It just makes sense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe help people and give them stuff. It\u2019s just a good way to live life,\u201d\u00a0Bill Kreutzmann<\/strong> adds. \u201cI wish that more people in the world lived life that way, instead of wars and bombings.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The members of The Dead will also be celebrated for their philanthropy by the Recording Academy in February as the MusiCares Person of the Year.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt all follows in that tradition of teaching the industry what it should know about,\u201d\u00a0Mickey Hart<\/strong> says. \u201cThat\u2019s that Grateful Dead kind of style, where we just did it because we knew it was the right thing to do.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cIf we wanted to do this the rest of our lives was the idea, we have to do these things, because people support us \u2014 and we reciprocate.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0band members also reiterated to <\/span>Billboard<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>\u00a0their previous revelation that prior to Phil Lesh<\/strong>‘s\u00a0October death they were making plans to reunite for\u00a0their 60th anniversary in 2025, noting Lesh was excited about the possibility.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c(Phil)\u00a0had a dream that he was going to get to play with us three one more time,”\u00a0Kreutzmann notes. “And that didn\u2019t happen \u2014 but that\u2019s how it goes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The Kennedy Center Honors will air on CBS Dec. 22.<\/span><\/p>\n
