Grateful Dead<\/strong> and Bonnie Raitt<\/strong> will be celebrated on Sunday as some of this year\u2019s recipients of the Kennedy Center Honors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The celebration is happening at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., with highlights from the\u00a0ceremony to air Dec. 22 on CBS. So far performers set to honor this year’s recipients have not been announced.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a <\/span>Washington Post<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> profile released ahead of the ceremony, The Dead’s\u00a0Mickey Hart<\/strong>\u00a0discussed the band’s appeal, noting, \u201cYou couldn\u2019t pigeonhole the Grateful Dead. You still can\u2019t.”<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe Grateful Dead is a lot of things,” he added. “The Grateful Dead is a record. The Grateful Dead is mythology. The Grateful Dead is us. The Grateful Dead is a force.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

In her own <\/span>Washington Post<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a> profile, Raitt discussed her love of playing live.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s like a magical exhalation that happens, the exchange between the audience and us,\u201d she says. \u201cPlaying live is what drives you. That\u2019s what your purpose is. At the end of the night, I feel like I\u2019ve had my blood changed.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s celebration will be hosted by Queen Latifah<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>who received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2023. The other honorees this year are director\u00a0Francis Ford Coppola\u00a0<\/strong>and jazz musician\u00a0Arturo Sandoval<\/strong>, as well as the iconic Harlem venue The Apollo, which will receive a special Honors recognition as an American institution.<\/span><\/p>\n
