Ed Norton<\/strong> stars as folk legend Pete Seeger<\/strong> in the new Bob Dylan<\/strong> movie <\/span>A Complete Unknown<\/span><\/em>, and he realizes many people may not know how influential Seeger was to music.<\/span><\/p>\n

In an interview with <\/span>IndieWire<\/strong><\/span><\/em><\/a>, Norton says he hopes the film is \u201can opportunity to put a light on this period and how amazing these artists were and get reconnected to them,\u201d and that\u2019s particularly true\u00a0for Seeger, who Norton doesn\u2019t believe is as known as he should be.<\/span><\/p>\n

As an example of that,\u00a0Norton shares a story about the reaction\u00a0<\/span>Her<\/span><\/em> director Spike Jonze<\/strong>\u00a0had when he heard\u00a0Norton was playing Seeger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe was like, \u2018Wow, are you doing the music yourself?\u2019 I said yes. And he goes, \u2018Are you doing “Night Moves” and “Against the Wind” and “Old Time Rock & Roll”?’\u201d Norton says. \u201cI\u2019m like, \u2018<\/span>Pete\u00a0<\/span><\/em>Seeger, not Bob Seger<\/strong>!\u2019 And he was like, \u2018Wait, who is Pete Seeger?\u2019”<\/span><\/p>\n

Seeger penned such songs as “If I Had A Hammer” and “Where Have All The Flowers Gone.”\u00a0He was such an important figure in music that in\u00a02006 Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> did a whole album, <\/span>We Shall Overcome:\u00a0The Seeger Sessions, <\/span><\/em>dedicated to\u00a0Seeger’s\u00a0music. And\u00a0Norton says he\u2019s not surprised.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBruce, to me, he\u2019s 100 percent, no question whatsoever, the Pete Seeger of our generation and our time,\u201d Norton says. \u201cHe\u2019s the guy who really actually took up the mantle.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cAnd I\u2019d argue more than anyone, since Pete Seeger, Bruce Springsteen has been the troubadour of the working man and also an unapologetic deployer of music toward political progressive humanism. He\u2019s a force. Bruce has long been one of the deacons in the Pete Seeger church.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

A Complete Unknown<\/span><\/em> opens Dec. 25.<\/span><\/p>\n
