It was a monumental year for The Beatles<\/strong>, as they celebrated the 60th anniversary of\u00a0the first time they arrived\u00a0in the U.S.<\/span><\/p>\n

In February 1964 The Beatles \u2014\u00a0Paul McCartney<\/strong>, John Lennon<\/strong>, George Harrison<\/strong> and Ringo Starr<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 made their first visit to the U.S. to play <\/span>The Ed Sullivan Show<\/span><\/em>, which was seen by a then-record 73 million viewers, a moment that launched Beatlemania in America.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0moment in history\u00a0was highlighted in 2024 with\u00a0the documentary\u00a0<\/span>Beatles ’64<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0directed by\u00a0David Tedeschi\u00a0<\/strong>and produced by\u00a0Martin Scorsese<\/strong>, which debuted on Disney+ in November. It featured never-before-seen footage of the legendary group and their fans during the height of Beatlemania.<\/span><\/p>\n

The\u00a0anniversary was one of many Beatles-related highlights of 2024. Among the others:<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sam Mendes<\/strong> announced he\u2019ll be directing four movies about The Beatles, each one told from the point of view of a different band member. So far no casting has officially been announced, but Ringo let it slip that <\/span>Saltburn<\/span><\/em>\u2019s Barry Keoghan<\/strong> would be playing him.<\/span><\/p>\n

McCartney\u2019s original backing track for \u201cBlackbird\u201d was used for Beyonc\u00e9<\/strong>‘s interpretation of the song, retitled \u201cBlackbiird,\u201d which appeared on her album <\/span>Cowboy Carter<\/span><\/em>. He called it a “killer version” of the song.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ringo dropped the EP\u00a0<\/span>Crooked Boy<\/span><\/em>, produced by Linda Perry<\/strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>and announced\u00a0he\u2019ll release the country album\u00a0<\/span>Look Up<\/span><\/em>, co-written and produced by\u00a0T Bone Burnett<\/strong>, on Jan. 10.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Beatles’ 1970 documentary <\/span>Let It Be<\/span><\/em> debuted on Disney+ in May, marking the first time it had been available in over 50 years. The film was restored from the original 16mm negative by\u00a0Peter Jackson<\/strong>\u2019s Park Road Post Production.<\/span><\/p>\n

Lennon\u2019s 1973 solo album,\u00a0<\/span>Mind Games<\/span><\/em>, was reissued, including an Ultimate Collection that featured unreleased outtakes, stripped down mixes, instrumentals, demos, rehearsals and even what was described as \u201cstudio chatter.\u201d It earned a Grammy nomination for Best Boxed or Limited Edition Package.<\/span><\/p>\n

Paul McCartney and\u00a0Wings<\/strong>\u2019\u00a0<\/strong>often bootlegged album <\/span>One Hand Clapping <\/span><\/em>got an official release in June, 50 years after it was recorded. The album was recorded at Abbey Road Studios in August 1974 as a video documentary and possible live album, although it\u00a0didn’t officially come out until now.<\/span><\/p>\n

Harrison\u2019s first sitar, used during the recording sessions for the song \u201cNorwegian Wood,\u201d sold at auction for $66,993, while one of Lennon\u2019s 12-string guitars, used to record several Beatles classics, sold for $2.9 million, making it the most expensive Beatles guitar ever to sell at auction. Harrison\u2019s Resonet Futurama, a Czechoslovakian-made electric guitar, sold\u00a0for $1.27 million, a world record for a Harrison guitar sold at auction.<\/span><\/p>\n

The 50th anniversary of Harrison\u2019s solo album\u00a0<\/span>Living in the Material World\u00a0<\/span><\/em>was celebrated with a series of new reissues, including a super deluxe edition featuring 12 previously unreleased recordings.<\/span><\/p>\n

Two new Lennon documentaries debuted:\u00a0<\/span>One to One: John & Yoko, <\/span><\/em>which focused on Lennon and wife Yoko Ono<\/strong>\u2019s 1972 One to One concerts in New York City, and <\/span>Daytime Revolution<\/span><\/em>, about the time in February 1972 when John and Yoko co-hosted <\/span>The Mike Douglas Show<\/span><\/em> for a week.<\/span><\/p>\n

In October, McCartney launched a new leg of his Got Back tour in Montevideo, Uruguay, and\u00a0added\u00a0the band’s 2023 song \u201cNow and Then,” which was\u00a0billed as the final Beatles single, to the set list.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cNow and Then” went on to receive a Grammy nomination for Record of the Year.<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

The massive vinyl box set\u00a0<\/span>The Beatles: 1964 U.S. Albums In Mono\u00a0<\/span><\/em>was released featuring seven albums the band released in the U.S. from January 1964 and March 1965. It marked the first time these albums have been available on vinyl since 1995.<\/span><\/p>\n

And to close out the year, there was a Beatles reunion at McCartney’s final night at the O2 in London on Dec. 19, with Ringo coming out to join his former bandmate on two songs, \u201cSgt. Pepper\u2019s Lonely Hearts Club Band (Reprise)\u201d and \u201cHelter Skelter.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
