There certainly were a lot of big things happening in music in 2024. Here’s a roundup of some of the other music stories that made headlines this year:<\/span><\/p>\n

– The four members of R.E.M.<\/strong> \u2013 Michael Stipe<\/strong>, Mike Mills<\/strong>, Peter Buck<\/strong> and Bill Berry<\/strong> \u2013 reunited for a performance of their 1991 hit \u201cLosing My Religion\u201d at their induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York. It was the first time all four members performed together since\u00a01995.\u00a0<\/span>Also inducted into the Hall of Fame that night was Steely Dan<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Donald Fagen\u00a0<\/strong>and the late\u00a0Walter Becker<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

– After postponing their 2023 Peace Out tour when frontman Steven Tyler<\/strong> fractured his larynx onstage, Aerosmith<\/strong>\u00a0rescheduled the tour \u2014 only to cancel it in August, one month before it was to start up again. Not only that, they announced their retirement from the road for good, citing Tyler\u2019s continued vocal issues.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Also announcing their retirement were\u00a0Jeff Lynne\u2019s ELO<\/strong>, noting their 2023 Over and Out Tour would be their last, and\u00a0REO Speedwagon<\/strong>, who\u00a0cited \u201cirreconcilable differences\u201d between the band\u2019s only two remaining original members, frontman Kevin Cronin<\/strong> and bassist and vocalist\u00a0Bruce Hall<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

– There were a lot of big catalog sales this year, including KISS<\/strong>, who made a deal with Pophouse, the Swedish company behind\u00a0ABBA<\/strong>\u2019s London hologram show,\u00a0<\/span>Voyage<\/span><\/em>. Reports claimed the deal was worth $300 million. Queen<\/strong> also reportedly sold their catalog to Sony,\u00a0in\u00a0a deal\u00a0said to be worth $1.27 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Speaking of Queen, in September guitarist Brian May<\/strong> revealed he was recovering from a \u201cminor stroke\u201d that left him without the use of his left arm, putting his ability to play guitar in doubt. By the time he made his announcement he had already been improving.<\/span><\/p>\n

– The Zombies<\/strong>\u2019 Rod Argent<\/strong> announced his retirement from touring after suffering a stroke. It prompted the band to cancel all their planned shows for 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Journey<\/strong> members Neal Schon<\/strong> and Jonathan Cain<\/strong>\u00a0were in a court battle\u00a0over the band\u2019s finances. Cain sued\u00a0over what he claimed was Schon\u2019s overspending and requested the court appoint a third party to the board of their company to settle their disagreements. Schon called the accusations \u201cabsolute rubbish.\u201d In the end they settled the dispute and agreed to hire a third director of their company.<\/span><\/p>\n

– The Guess Who<\/strong> founding singer\u00a0Burton Cummings\u00a0<\/strong>and guitarist\u00a0Randy Bachman\u00a0<\/strong>settled the lawsuit they filed against original members\u00a0Jim Kale\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Garry Peterson<\/strong>\u00a0in October 2023, accusing them of tricking fans into thinking Cummings and Bachman were still performing with the group, when they were actually getting a “cover band.” The settlement resulted in\u00a0Cummings and Bachman\u00a0acquiring the trademark for the name The Guess Who.<\/span><\/p>\n

– Don Henley<\/strong> took the stand in the trial of three men charged with conspiracy involving nearly 100 pages of his handwritten notes and lyrics for the\u00a0Eagles\u00a0<\/strong>album\u00a0<\/span>Hotel California<\/span><\/em>. In the end, the case was dismissed by a judge due to Henley\u2019s lawyers’ \u201cjarringly late\u201d disclosure of thousands of pages of material.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

– Speaking of the Eagles<\/strong>, they wrapped the Long Goodbye tour\u00a0but it didn\u2019t keep them off the stage. They kicked off a residency at the Las Vegas Sphere in September.\u00a0Also launching a residency at the Sphere was Dead & Company<\/strong>, who just announced a second residency in 2025.<\/span><\/p>\n

– And Lenny Kravitz<\/strong>, who dropped the new album <\/span>Blue Electric Light<\/span><\/em> this year, went viral\u00a0<\/span>with a video<\/strong><\/span><\/a> of him lifting weights in boots, a mesh shirt, leather pants and sunglasses.<\/span><\/p>\n
