Director James Mangold<\/strong>\u00a0is known for making movies about musicians, like <\/span>Walk the Line<\/span><\/em> about Johnny Cash<\/strong>\u00a0and his recent release, the\u00a0Bob Dylan <\/strong>biopic\u00a0<\/span>A Complete Unknown<\/span><\/em>. So what music\u00a0has played a pivotal role in\u00a0his life?<\/span><\/p>\n

In\u00a0a new interview with <\/span>NME<\/strong><\/span><\/a>, Mangold shared the music that he considers the soundtrack\u00a0to\u00a0his life, and it includes Bruce Springsteen<\/strong> and\u00a0R.E.M.<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mangold says\u00a0the first concert he ever went to was Springsteen in 1980, just a few days after the death of The<\/strong>\u00a0Beatles<\/strong>‘\u00a0John Lennon<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI could only afford nosebleed seats but I was so thrilled to be seeing Springsteen, who was a hero of mine. Still is,\u201d he says. \u201cHonestly, the music sounded like s*** from where I was in the rafters, but just seeing him in real life, existing, standing there on the edge of the stage, it was thrilling.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cSpringsteen is a touchstone for me. There\u2019s incredible economy of storytelling in his songwriting.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Mangold also reveals that R.E.M.’s \u201cIt\u2019s The End of the World As We Know It\u201d is the song he can\u2019t get out of his head, while \u201cThe Bare Necessities\u201d from <\/span>The Jungle Book<\/span><\/em> is the first song he remembers hearing and Glen<\/strong> Campbell<\/strong>‘s “Wichita Lineman” is the song he wants played at his funeral.<\/span><\/p>\n

Boston<\/strong>\u2019s 1976 self-titled debut was the first album he ever bought, although he notes, “The best song is \u2018More Than A Feeling,\u2019 obviously. The album immediately goes downhill after that.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

And Cash also plays a part in Mangold’s\u00a0soundtrack, with the director sharing that\u00a0\u201cA Boy Named Sue\u201d is his go-to karaoke tune, mostly because he\u2019s a baritone. He says he loves singing \u201canything by Johnny Cash,\u201d noting \u201cthat’s in\u00a0my range.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
