British guitarist John Sykes<\/strong>, a member of both Thin Lizzy<\/strong> and Whitesnake,<\/strong> has passed away at the age of 65. His death was announced\u00a0in a post on his official Facebook page<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is with great sorrow we share that John Sykes has passed away after a hard fought battle with cancer,\u201d read a message on the site. \u201cHe will be remembered by many as a man with exceptional musical talent but for those who didn\u2019t know him personally, he was a thoughtful, kind, and charismatic man whose presence lit up the room.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe certainly marched to the beat of his own drum and always pulled for the underdog,\u201d the post continued. \u201cIn his final days, he spoke of his sincere love and gratitude for his fans who stuck by him through all these years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, it noted, \u201cWhile the impact of his loss is profound and the mood somber, we hope the light of his memory will extinguish the shadow of his absence.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sykes joined Thin Lizzy in September 1982, after having teamed with the band\u2019s frontman Phil Lynott<\/strong> to co-write the track \u201cPlease Don\u2019t Leave Me.\u201d He continued to play with the different incarnations of the band following Lynott\u2019s 1986 death, and eventually left the group in 2009.<\/p>\n

Sykes joined Whitesnake in 1984 and appeared on their sixth studio album, Slide It In<\/em>, which was released the same year, and became a commercial success for the band. He also co-wrote several songs on the followup, 1987<\/em>, including hits “Is This Love,”and\u00a0 “Still of the Night.”\u00a0 The\u00a0record became the\u00a0band\u2019s most commercially successful album, although\u00a0Sykes and his other bandmates\u00a0were let go by frontman David Coverdale<\/strong> before the album\u2019s release.<\/p>\n
