After two successful solo albums, Face Value<\/em> and Hello, I Must Be Going<\/em>, Genesis<\/strong> frontman Phil Collins<\/strong>\u00a0saw his solo career skyrocket thanks to the release of his third solo record, No Jacket Required<\/em>, which is celebrating its 40th anniversary on Saturday.<\/p>\n

The\u00a01985 release saw Collins embracing a more up-tempo sound, which proved to be wildly popular with fans. The album\u00a0hit #1 on the Billboard<\/em> 200 Album chart, where it spent seven weeks. It also went to #1 in several other countries, including the U.K., Australia, New Zealand and Canada.<\/p>\n

No Jacket Required<\/em>, which featured guest appearances by Sting<\/strong> and Collins\u2019 former Genesis bandmate Peter Gabriel<\/strong> on background vocals, contained four top-10 hits: the #1 singles \u201cSussudio<\/strong><\/a>\u201d and \u201cOne More Night<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d as well as \u201cDon\u2019t Lose My Number<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d which peaked at #4, and \u201cTake Me Home<\/strong><\/a>,\u201d which peaked at #7.<\/p>\n

Collins has said the album\u2019s title was inspired by an evening out in Chicago with Led Zeppelin<\/strong>\u2019s Robert Plant<\/strong>, where he was denied admittance to a restaurant because it had a \u201cjacket required\u201d dress code.\u00a0<\/p>\n

No Jacket Required<\/em> went on to become one of the bestselling records of all time and in 2001 was certified Diamond by the RIAA for selling 12 million copies in the U.S. It also won several accolades, including three Grammys,\u00a0one for album of the year.<\/p>\n

And while fans may have loved the album, it seems Collins grew to like it less and less. In fact, in a 2016 interview with Rolling Stone<\/em> he claimed it was his least favorite record, sharing, “At the time, I wasn’t being me.”<\/p>\n
