Queen<\/strong> continues to celebrate the release of their Queen I<\/em> box set, this time with a special video focused on Roger Taylor<\/strong>\u2019s drum contributions to their debut album.<\/p>\n

In the latest special episode of Queen the Greatest<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, Taylor\u00a0reveals\u00a0that\u00a0he was disappointed when they got to Trident Studios to record the album, because he had little control over his sound.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt Trident, it did feel like, \u2018OK, now we’re in it,\u2019 but I didn\u2019t really get on with their ideas,\u201d he shares. \u201cThey had a drum booth and it was a well-known sound: very dry and dead, which is not what I wanted. I wanted to hear the drums resonate.\u201d<\/p>\n

He adds, \u201cI didn’t want it to go \u2018thud, whack.\u2019 But that’s what they wanted. There was cloth over everything, and everything was taped down.\u201d<\/p>\n

Taylor also notes that he couldn\u2019t even play on his own drum kit.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had to play this s***** little kit. It was just awful,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were told, \u2018This is the Trident sound.\u2019 But we didn’t want the Trident sound. We wanted our sound.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for why they went along with it, he\u00a0says, “We sort of just did what we were told.”<\/p>\n

The Queen I<\/em> box set, which was released in October, features a new mix of the album, which the band is much happier with.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat we’ve done now with Queen I<\/em>\u00a0… is we\u2019ve used all the actual recordings but made it sound more like we wanted it to sound at the time,\u201d Roger says. \u201cSo it\u2019s \u2018liver,\u2019 the drums are more live and more ambient. So, for me, it’s a significant improvement, and I know Brian <\/strong>(May<\/strong>) feels the same.\u201d<\/p>\n
