The new documentary Becoming Led Zeppelin<\/em> may never have happened had the film\u2019s director,\u00a0Bernard MacMahon<\/strong>, not accepted an invitation from the band\u2019s legendary guitarist Jimmy Page<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with The Guardian<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, MacMahon says he kew going into the project there was a good chance he\u2019d have trouble getting the surviving band members \u2013 Page, John Paul Jones<\/strong> and Robert Plant<\/strong> \u2013 to agree to the film.<\/p>\n

He tells the paper\u00a0he knew \u201cit was incredibly likely that once I put in a phone call, the group might say they were not interested. There was every chance we would not even get a meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n

It was Page who was the first to agree to a meeting, at a London hotel in 2017. They spent seven hours talking, with Page quizzing him on band facts and also showing him \u201cold diaries, dating back to the ’60s.\u201d In the end, Page agreed to the project, telling the director, \u201cI\u2019m in \u2013 but you have to get the others on board.\u201d<\/p>\n

But it seems Page\u2019s decision had conditions. He later asked MacMahon to join him at Pangbourne, the boathouse where he once lived and the band rehearsed, and luckily he agreed.<\/p>\n

\u201cLater he revealed it had been a test,\u201d the film\u2019s producer, Allison McGourty<\/strong>, says. \u201cIf you had said no to Pangbourne we wouldn\u2019t have done the film.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

MacMahon eventually got Jones and Plant to sign on to the project, and the members were then interviewed in 2018, with MacMahon telling the paper none of the\u00a0rockers\u00a0had any editorial demands regarding the film.<\/p>\n

Becoming Led Zeppelin<\/em> will open exclusively in IMAX theaters on Feb. 7, with early access screenings in 18 markets starting Feb. 5. It will then hit theaters nationwide on Feb. 14.<\/p>\n
