Disney\/Jennifer Pottheiser<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Elton John<\/strong>, Paul McCartney<\/strong>\u00a0and The Who<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Pete Townshend<\/strong> are among the artists who\u2019ve signed an open letter published in The Times<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0calling out plans to change U.K. copyright laws to benefit AI companies.<\/p>\n

The letter<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0contends that the planned changes \u201crepresent a wholesale giveaway of rights and income from the U.K. creative sectors to big tech.\u201d As The Times<\/em> notes, the changes would allow these companies to \u201cuse copyrighted works to train their AI software without permission unless the owner opts out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other artists who\u2019ve signed the letter include Sting<\/strong>, Duran Duran\u2019<\/strong>s Simon Le Bon<\/strong>, Ed Sheeran <\/strong>and\u00a0Dua Lipa<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Along with the letter, a group of 1,000 musicians has released a silent album to Spotify, titled Is This What We Want?<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, in protest of the possible AI changes.<\/p>\n

The album features 12 tracks with recordings of sound from empty studios and venues, representing what the artists believe could happen if the copyright changes go through. The song titles spell out a message that reads, \u201cThe British government must not legalise music theft to benefit AI companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Artists lending their name to the album include The Clash<\/strong>, Blur<\/strong>‘s\u00a0Damon Albarn<\/strong>, Kate Bush<\/strong>, Radiohead<\/strong>\u2019s Ed O\u2019Brien<\/strong>, Cat Stevens\/Yusuf Islam<\/strong>, Tori Amos\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Annie Lennox<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Proceeds from the album will be donated to the charity Help Musicians.<\/p>\n
