It&#8217;s taught by <strong>David Gans<\/strong>, producer and host of the nationally syndicated <em>Grateful Dead Hour<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/continuingstudies.stanford.edu\/courses\/liberal-arts-and-sciences\/composition-interpretation-and-improvisation-the-music-of-the-grateful-dead\/20243_MUS-72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>description<\/strong><\/a>, the course \u201coffers a comprehensive exploration of their distinctive musical style\u00a0\u2014where\u00a0individual contributions converge into a cohesive sound that creates \u2018gestalt magic,\u2019\u201d with each class focused on five or six select pieces of Dead music.<\/p>\n<p>The course will feature a variety of Dead-related guest speakers, including <strong>Rob Barraco<\/strong>, keyboardist and vocalist of Grateful Dead tribute band <strong>Dark Star Orchestra<\/strong>; <strong>Jeff Mattson<\/strong>, also of Dark Star Orchestra, who performed with <strong>Bob Weir<\/strong>\u2019s <strong>RatDog<\/strong> and <strong>Dead &amp; Company<\/strong>;\u00a0and keyboardist <strong>Bob Bralove<\/strong>, who played with the Grateful Dead from 1987 to 1995.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether you&#8217;re a lifelong Deadhead or new to their music,\u201d the description says, \u201cthis course provides a valuable opportunity to appreciate the Grateful Dead&#8217;s enduring impact on modern music and culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Registration for the course <a href=\"https:\/\/continuingstudies.stanford.edu\/courses\/liberal-arts-and-sciences\/composition-interpretation-and-improvisation-the-music-of-the-grateful-dead\/20243_MUS-72\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>is now open<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This isn\u2019t the first time Stanford Continuing Studies has held a course about The Dead.
