In 2024, when Michael Shannon<\/strong> and Jason Narducy<\/strong>\u2019s tour celebrating R.E.M<\/strong>.\u2019s Murmur<\/em> hit Athens, Georgia, the home of R.E.M., the members of R.E.M. joined them onstage. Well, their latest tour, celebrating the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.\u2019s Fables of the Reconstruction<\/em>,\u00a0came to Athens on Thursday night and it happened again.<\/p>\n

The duo brought the tour to Athens\u2019 40 Watt Club, and video posted online shows\u00a0R.E.M.\u2019s Michael Stipe<\/strong>, Mike Mills<\/strong>, Peter Buck<\/strong> and Bill Berry<\/strong>\u00a0hopping onstage to perform the\u00a0Reckoning<\/em> track \u201cPretty Persuasion.\u201d<\/p>\n

This was a step up from the 2024 show, where Stipe joined them all onstage but didn’t perform. In fact, this is only the second time all four members of R.E.M. have performed together since their 2011 breakup. The previous time was at the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction in 2024, where they performed \u201cLosing My Religion.\u201d<\/p>\n

And while \u201cPretty Persuasion\u201d was the only song Stipe took part in,\u00a0according to setlist.fm<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the other members of the band joined in\u00a0for various R.E.M. tracks, including the Fables<\/em>\u00a0tune \u201cWendell Gee,\u201d Document\u2019<\/em>s \u201cStrange,\u201d Reckoning<\/em>\u2019s \u201cLetter Never Sent,\u201d \u201cSecond Guessing,\u201d \u201c(Don\u2019t Go Back to) Rockville\u201d and \u201cLittle America\u201d and\u00a0Murmur\u2019<\/em>s \u201cSitting Still.”<\/p>\n

Shannon and Narducy also performed two songs by The Velvet Underground<\/strong>, \u201cFemme Fatale,\u201d for which they were joined by Buck, Mills and Patti Smith Group<\/strong> guitarist Lenny Kaye<\/strong>, and \u201cThere She Goes Again,\u201d with Buck and Kaye.<\/p>\n

Shannon and Narducy bring their Fables of the Reconstruction<\/em> tour back to Athens’ 40 Watt Club for a second show on Friday. As for whether R.E.M. will return, a post on their Instagram<\/strong><\/a> noted, “Who knows what night two, tonight, will have in store.”<\/p>\n
