Blondie<\/strong>\u2019s Debbie Harry<\/strong>\u00a0is one of the many artists paying tribute to the late David Johansen<\/strong>, lead singer and last surviving original member of the proto-glam-punk band New York Dolls<\/strong>, who passed away Friday at 75.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of my favorite things was to go see the New York Dolls. They were so exciting to watch. They were a real rock band,\u201d Harry wrote<\/strong><\/a>, noting how \u201cthey were so New York.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were straight but they dressed in drag, at a time when the cops were still raiding gay bars. They were ragged and raunchy and uninhibited, strutting, swaggering about in their leatherette, lipstick, and high heels,\u201d she added. \u201cThe Dolls influenced countless bands, including 70\u2019s [sic] punk bands, glam metal bands, and alternative rock bands. Thank you for your service, David. You will be missed dearly\u2026 and never forgotten.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pearl Jam<\/strong>\u2019s Mike McCready<\/strong>\u00a0wrote that the New York Dolls \u201cwere so ahead of their time\u201d and mentioned\u00a0how his early band Shadow<\/strong>\u00a0was influenced by them.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were very important to me and my friends in the early 80\u2019s [sic] Seattle music scene,\u201d he shared<\/strong><\/a>. \u201cThey seemed free and dangerous while playing loud rock and roll.\u201d He called Johansen \u201ca singer with great \u2013 attitude.\u201d\u00a0McCready ended the post with, \u201cRest in Glam, David Johansen,” and suggested a few songs people should check out.<\/p>\n

Other artists paying tribute to Johansen include KISS<\/strong>\u2019 Paul Stanley<\/strong><\/a>, Billy Idol<\/strong><\/a>, Idol\u2019s guitarist Steve Stevens<\/strong><\/a>, <\/strong>Stevie Van Zandt<\/strong><\/a>, Def Leppard<\/strong>‘s\u00a0<\/strong>Joe Elliott<\/strong><\/a> <\/strong>and\u00a0Duran Duran<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n
