It\u2019s been over a decade since Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers<\/strong> keyboardist Benmont Tench<\/strong> released his debut solo album, You Should Be So Lucky<\/em>, and he\u2019s back with his sophomore release, The Melancholy Season.<\/em><\/p>\n

Tench tells ABC Audio that while he\u2019s had enough songs to make a new record since about 2017, \u201cthings had intervened\u201d that kept him from doing so, including health issues, a new baby and then\u00a0COVID-19. But he thinks the delay wound up working out for him.<\/p>\n

\u201cThough I had enough songs … I didn\u2019t have all of these songs,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd these songs, the ones that came in later, when put with some of the earlier ones, made a coherent whole.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tench says the\u00a0tracks on the album paint a picture of what he was going through between 2014 and 2019, which includes\u00a0Petty’s death in 2017. He says of the songs, \u201cIt’s more of a picture of … what was in the air for a concentrated period of time during which there had been a lot of changes.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for naming the\u00a0album\u00a0The Melancholy Season, <\/em>Tench shares,<\/em>\u00a0\u201cI thought it was a good title for a record. I also thought that it summed up the mood of the record pretty well.\u201d<\/p>\n

The album\u2019s cover is a painting Tench had seen at the Art Institute of Chicago, which he\u00a0says he\u2019s \u201calways loved.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when I thought, ‘I want to call this record The Melancholy Season<\/em>,’ the first thing I said was, \u2018Do you think there’s a way we can use this painting for the cover of the album?\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cBecause I think it evokes the record very well.”<\/p>\n
