Camerata del Sol Brings Unique Production to the Borderlands

Camerata Del Sol, the premiere chamber ensemble in the Las Cruces / El Paso area, will present an historic and unprecedented production featuring music by Baroque women composers. On this occasion, Camerata Del Sol will team up with visiting artists and Baroque music specialists, Diego Villamil (violin) and Héctor Torres (theorbo). Appearing as soloists in this concert will be local harpsichordist Joe Lecher and internationally acclaimed soprano Heather Dials. Fourteen local musicians will accompany the soloists, including Brigid McCarthy, concertmaster of the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra. The project has gained the attention of the National Endowment for the Arts, which recommended it for underwriting. “We couldn’t be more excited to share this music with the community,” says executive director Amalia Zeitlin. “As far as we are aware, there has never been a concert of Baroque women composers in the history of our borderlands region.”

The guest artists and local ensemble members will participate in free outreach activities throughout the week leading up to the concerts, including masterclasses for NMSU music students, sectionals in the public school orchestra programs, and visits to Title I elementary schools. “I could not be more proud that we continue to make music accessible, at little or no cost to the greater community of El Paso and Las Cruces. We have been able to stay faithful to this very important mission throughout this global health crisis,” added Daniel Vega-Albela, artistic director of Camerata Del Sol. “We cannot wait for production week to start.”
