Keeping Cruces Connected with Real Community Conversations

Nearly two full months have come and gone since Las Cruces businesses found themselves in the midst of one of the craziest environments imaginable. With so many potential clients and customers being ordered to shelter in place under the New Mexico Stay Home Public Health Order, many business owners have been faced with the painful decision of shutting down or fighting desperately to keep the lights on. For those that have survived this long, each new day of the continued lockdown brings a heavier sense of unease and impassioned frustration.

Lyndsey Kalson sat down with Debbi Moore, the new CEO of the Greater Las Cruces Chamber of Commerce, for a one on one phone conversation to learn more about what the Chamber is doing to help local businesses around the city while we start to move into this period of phased re-openings.

Develop a plan. The Chamber has put together a five-way plan that local businesses can follow to help prepare to re-open, as well as what they can do once the doors are open for customers again. The steps include building a customized COVID-19 responsive plan for your business, respect social distancing, create a cleaning schedule, market the COVID plan put in place, and then respect the process local and state leaders are attempting to implement. Here's the 5 step plan Debbie suggests-

Be fluid and be patient. Debbi spoke honestly about what may be coming down the road as we all move forward. “We don’t know what the new norm is going to be.” She estimates a possible 18-24 month period for businesses to find their new normal.

Understand the resources available to your business. From Zoom meetings to structured guides helping business owners go step by step through the PPP processes and applications, all businesses in Las Cruces are encouraged to find out how the Chamber can help them. “We’re all navigating new waters together,” Debbi explains. “Sharing is really key.”
