City of Las Cruces Parks & Recreation Employment Success Story

Elise Rodriguez

Elise Rodriguez was a 17-year-old high school student from Organ Mountain (Oñate) High School when she began working for the City of Las Cruces Parks & Recreation Department as a Student Recreation Aide (Summer 2017). Having a background in softball, she was selected to work for the Recreation Section in Athletics where she made a positive impression on her co-workers, immediate supervisors, and section management. She worked well with others, had a great work ethic, she completed all tasks and assignments successfully, and demonstrated a willingness to learn.

After high school graduation in May 2018 and upon completion of her Student Recreation Aide contract, Rodriguez applied, interviewed, and accepted a part-time cashier position in Aquatics. It was there that she became familiar with cash handling, excelled in the utilization of the departments’ registration software, and became well versed on program opportunities offered to the community in both Aquatics and Athletics.

In late 2018, the Athletics section was looking to fill multiple Basketball Scorekeeper vacancies and due to Rodriguez’s interest in athletic programming, she applied, interviewed, and accepted a position that December. As a scorekeeper, she continued to demonstrate her outstanding work ethic, dependability, punctuality, and revealed outstanding customer service skills. Section management often assigned her to take the lead on various tasks and did not hesitate to have her represent the section during important events in the community. Rodriguez continued to work successfully as a Scorekeeper (Recreation Aide) from 2018 to mid-2021 while also working on obtaining her college degree.

In August 2020, Rodriguez was placed into an Interim Recreation Coordinator position due to staff vacancies and personnel military obligations. She did a great job fulfilling the duties of that position while also re-inventing and modifying recreation programming opportunities during the Covid-19 pandemic. She was always willing to help co-workers’ complete their assignments, she stepped in when others were not available, she assisted other departments during special events, and always conducted herself in a professional and courteous manner. Due to her continued growth and experience as a Student Recreation Aide, Cashier, and Scorekeeper (Recreation Aide), Rodriguez ultimately accepted a position as a full-time Athletics Recreation Coordinator in October (2021) where she currently oversees multiple athletic leagues and programs such as youth flag football, soccer, and cheer. Rodriguez is a prime example of student employment success, and we look forward to (and support) her continued growth in the coming years.
