Per Las Cruces City Manager Report- The City of Las Cruces’ Quality of Life and Parks & Recreation departments have partnered with the TRIO Upward Bound GISD/LCPS Program, at New Mexico State University, to help find a community service project the group will participate in, on Feb. 15, 2020.
The project TRIO Upward Bound GISD/LCPS will participate in is still being finalized. The Quality of Life and Parks & Recreation departments will also ensure the TRIO Upward Bound Program becomes part of the City’s annual planning under the Volunteer Network.
“We want to volunteer,” said Rosa De La Torre-Burmeister, director of the TRIO Upward Bound Program. Every year we have a TRIO Upward Bound volunteer program. It is our opportunity to give back to the community.”
In recent years, the TRIO Upward Bound Program has partnered with nonprofit organizations in Las Cruces such as Jardín de los Niños, Casa de Peregrinos, and Mesilla Valley Community of Hope.
Ninety students, from Las Cruces High School, Mayfield High School, Oñate High School, Gadsden High School and Santa Teresa High School, participate in the TRIO Upward Bound Program. The program has been in existence for 30 years. The TRIO Upward Bound Program receives 100 percent of its funding from the U.S. Department of Education.
TRIO Upward Bound is one of eight TRIO Programs. TRIO was given its name after the first three programs.
The Upward Bound program provides fundamental support to participants in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits. Upward Bound serves: high school students from low-income families; and high school students from families in which neither parent holds a bachelor’s degree, and/or high school students who demonstrate a need for academic support.
Upward Bound projects provide academic instruction in mathematics, laboratory sciences, composition, literature, and foreign languages.
De La Torre-Burmeister said in the 30 years of the TRIO Upward Bound Program, some of its participants have gone on to become doctors, lawyers, judges and entrepreneurs. De La Torre-Burmeister added the success of the program has led to the expansion of the program into Hatch and Alamogordo.
