Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office Recovers Stash of Stolen Property
Yesterday, November 18, 2020, shortly before 10:00 a.m., the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office received information on the whereabouts of a reported stolen recreational vehicle. The information led deputies to an address on the 5200 block of Hermanitas Pl. When deputies arrived to the address on Hermanitas Pl., they recognized the property owner, identified as Marcus Anthony Ortiz. Deputies attempted to call Mr. Ortiz to them but Mr. Ortiz retreated back into his residence.
While attempting to call Mr. Ortiz out of his home, a deputy on scene recognized a dark in color Dodge Challenger with racing stripes on the property. Several days prior to this call for service, the deputy had taken a stolen vehicle report in reference to a vehicle matching the Dodge’s description. Deputies observed several vehicles within the property.
After a short period of negotiations, Mr. Ortiz agreed to come outside without further incident. Mr. Ortiz was placed under arrest at that time due to outstanding warrants.
DASO Criminal Investigations Division (CID) applied for and were granted a search warrant for the property. Upon execution of the search warrant, various stolen items were recovered.
During the search warrant execution, detectives and deputies were led to a second location on the 5200 block of Hermanitas Pl., belonging to Jaime Lopez Garcia. Detectives and deputies observed a Polaris Ranger on the property. The Polaris Ranger had been one of two reported stolen ATVs by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). A second search warrant was granted for the second property.
At this time, detectives and deputies are actively conducting both search warrants. Several vehicles have been recovered as well as ATVs, tow trailers, reported stolen items from several surrounding businesses, and other various items. Some of the more specific items recovered are a Federal Public Defender’s vehicle, 2 BLM Polaris Rangers, and several tools from Kelly Cable.
Marcus Anthony Ortiz and Jaime Lopez Garcia have both been placed under arrest at this time and more charges are expected pending the outcome of the completed search warrants.
The investigation is still in its preliminary stages; however, we expect to recover more property as it continues. We ask the public to refrain from calling and allow investigators to contact you as property is located. If after 10 days from today’s date an investigator has not contacted you, please call the Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office.
