Drive-Thru Graduation Celebration Coming for LCPS Class of 2020

This afternoon, Las Cruces Public Schools held a virtual press conference addressing plans for the graduating class of 2020. The full video is linked below.

 

The highlights-

Superintendent Dr. Karen Trujillo spoke about the coming plans for Seniors within the Las Cruces Public Schools district. Because of the relaxation of recent Public Health Orders issued yesterday by the Governor, plans could officially be finalized.

Honoring our students is the top priority at the moment. Joined by the local High School Principals, a meeting held this past Tuesday with Las Cruces and New Mexico State Police.

Mr. Frost, Principal of Mayfield, working extensively on the graduation celebration with other principals, says they have made the decision to have the Graduation Celebration at the regularly scheduled times at the location of the Feild of Dreams in Las Cruces.

Control of traffic and broadcasting ceremonies live online and loudspeakers is possible at the location. The principal of Arrowhead Park even encouraged all Las Cruces Seniors to decorate their caps for the occasion. She asked that family come to the event with no more than 5 people per vehicle, the Graduate as well as 4 family members. No more, per the extended Public Health Order.

The principal of Onate High School spoke briefly about the way students can receive their name cards and line up with help from staff on the East side of the Field of Dreams.

The principal of Centennial assured the public that principals will be reaching out to their graduation speakers to pre-record their speeches, pledge of allegiance, and more for each ceremony.

The principal of Rio Grande Prep, spoke of the procession beginning at the West Side of the lot, and Graduates may have their pictures taken at that time

The principal of Crossroads says that once graduates can drive straight at home after receiving their diploma and taking pictures. There will not be any parades or spectators.

Las Cruces High Principal assures all students that the principals will send out information to parents by Sunday. And the hope is to have a real graduation commencement at some point in the future.

The Graduation Schedule is as follows:

May 21 High School Graduations
Mayfield- 9:00 a.m.
Arrowhead Park 1:30 p.m.
Las Cruces High- 6:00 p.m.

May 22 HS Graduations
Centennial- 9:00 a.m.
Rio Grande Prep- 1:30 p.m.
Oñate- 6:00 p.m.
