Jan 2022 DAAC Gallery

Darien Bogart & Mary Prentice

The Arts Council opens its 2022 Gallery season with the artwork of Darien Bogart and Mary Prentice. Bogart’s vibrant landscapes will be shown in the main gallery, and Prentice’s whimsical birds will be in the Staszewski Library.

Bogart grew up in Florida and attended several Florida schools before graduating from Florida Atlantic University with a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts. While working as a graphic artist in the newspaper industry, he spent many hours honing his artistic skills and experimenting with different mediums. He moved west to pursue art full-time, and his work reflects the vibrant colors of both Florida and New Mexico.

“Living in New Mexico has allowed me the opportunity to explore the beauty of nature as a landscape painter,” explained Bogart. “Its influence surrounds you as you become part of the western landscape… The land and the light in the West seem to interweave playfully as the sun makes its daily journey across the sky. The shapes, color, contrast and textures that this land offers is beyond description and in turn are the strongest elements that unite my work.”

Without any background in art, Prentice began painting in 2012 as stress relief from a complicated job. She painted for herself and was reluctant to show her work to other people. Her wife, Monica, finally outed her to the world, and people responded positively to her colorful paintings of subjects composed of exciting patterns.

“I don’t think it is worth doing if it isn’t fun and colorful,” said Prentice. “What attracts me most to painting is the ability to play with colors.”
