Happy Birthday, Elton John!
The man born Reginald Kenneth Dwight turns 77 on March 25, and even though he’s officially “retired” from touring as of last year, he hasn’t slowed down at all.
Just in the last few months, he’s become an EGOT — winning an Emmy to go with his two Oscars, Tony and five Grammys — and received the prestigious Gershwin Prize for Popular Music from the Library of Congress. He also raised a record $10.8 million dollars for his Elton John AIDS Fund via the 32nd edition of his Academy Awards Viewing Party.
Elton also has a new musical, Tammy Faye, opening on Broadway in October, and another musical, The Devil Wears Prada, opening in London’s West End around the same time.
Starting May 18, some of Elton and his husband’s vast collection of photographs will go on display at London’s Victoria & Albert Museum in an exhibit called Fragile Beauty: Photographs from the Sir Elton John and David Furnish Collection.
As for new music from Elton, his husband and manager, David Furnish, told Variety in February, “I don’t think you’re going to have to wait too long [for new music]. I can’t say when but he’s making real progress.”
It wasn’t clear whether Furnish was talking about the album that Elton, speaking at November’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, claimed to have “just finished.”
