Selena Gomez<\/strong>‘s new film,\u00a0Emilia P\u00e9rez,<\/em> premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, and it was a rousing success.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> reports<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0the film earned a nine-minute standing ovation, which was, at that point, the longest of any other film at the festival. According to Variety<\/em>, Selena cried at the reaction from the crowd.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Emilia P\u00e9rez <\/em>is about a Rita, a lawyer played by Zoe Salda\u00f1a<\/strong>,\u00a0who helps Manitas, a drug cartel leader, played by Karla Sof\u00eda Gasc\u00f3n<\/strong>, get gender-affirming surgery to become a woman. Selena plays Manitas’ wife, who doesn’t know of her husband’s plans to transition. The actors sing at various points in the film.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was captivating, it was heartbreaking, it was really moving to me,\u201d Selena told <\/strong>Variety<\/strong><\/em><\/a> of the film, which she saw for the first time at the Cannes screening. “I had a blast and I love the songs. I think they\u2019re really beautiful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Selena wrote<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0on Instagram, “Thank you Cannes! I\u2019m so honored to be a small part of something so special in Emilia P\u00e9rez.”<\/em> She also thanked director\u00a0<\/em>Jacques Audiard<\/strong> “<\/em>from the bottom of my heart for believing in me,” as well as her co-stars: “Every single person a part of this film absolutely blew me away. Love you guys.”<\/p>\n
