Earlier this year, Hozier<\/strong> scored his first-ever U.S. #1 hit with “Too Sweet,” a song that didn’t make the final cut of his last full-length album, Unreal Unearth<\/em>. It’s hard to believe he didn’t release it because was he felt people wouldn’t like it or care about it.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Rolling Stone<\/em><\/a>,<\/em> Hozier says, “Maybe it\u2019s the pessimist in me. I was like, \u2018People don\u2019t want to hear this stuff, we\u2019ll just put it away.\u2019” But when he decided to put the song on his EP of outtakes, Unheard,<\/em> and then release it as a single, he became the first Irish act to top the Billboard<\/em> Hot 100 since the late Sin\u00e9ad O’Connor<\/strong> in 1990.<\/p>\n

Hozier is back with another EP of outtakes, Unaired<\/em>, which came out on Aug. 16. The first single, “Nobody’s Soldier,<\/a>” is about the frustrating and helpless experience of watching war and violence from afar. He says he chose it as a direct contrast to “Too Sweet.”<\/p>\n

Too Sweet\u2019 is one of the most lighthearted, fun songs that I\u2019ve ever put out,\u201d Hozier says. \u201cSo part of me was like, \u2018Well, I better follow this up with an anti-war song.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of the other songs on Unaired<\/em> were, like the songs on Unreal Unearth<\/em>, inspired by Dante<\/strong>‘s Inferno<\/em>, which is part of the narrative poem The Divine Comedy<\/em>. Hozier says he’s so into poetry that he’d like to go back to school to study it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I think poetry is something that I could probably put my focus into \u2014 and be hungry for \u2014 if I got rid of all other distractions,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve thought about it for a long time.\u201d<\/p>\n
