Lady Gaga<\/strong>‘s new movie, Joker: Folie \u00e0 Deux<\/em>, earned a lot of “Applause” at the Venice Film Festival on Sept. 4, but the reviews are another story.<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> reports<\/strong><\/a> that after the movie’s world premiere, the audience gave director Todd Phillips<\/strong>‘ sequel, starring Joaquin Phoenix<\/strong> as Arthur Fleck\/Joker and Gaga as Harley Quinn, an 11-minute standing ovation. But over at RottenTomatoes.com<\/strong><\/a>, about half the reviews are “rotten.”<\/p>\n

Vanity Fair<\/strong><\/em> <\/strong><\/a>called it “startlingly dull,” “a pointless procedural that seems to disdain its audience” and complained that Gaga is “woefully underused.” The BBC called it<\/strong><\/a> a “dreary, underwhelming, unnecessary slog,” but noted that it was a “welcome opportunity to hear Gaga belting out some of the most romantic standards in the American Songbook.”<\/p>\n

The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/em><\/a> said Gaga is a “compelling live-wire presence,” but complained that the overall movie is “often dour.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

Variety<\/em> described<\/strong><\/a> the film as “overly cautious” and said Gaga is “drastically underused” \u2014 her character “never quite takes wing.” The publication adds, “Gaga never gets a chance to do what she did in A Star Is Born:<\/em> seize the audience with her rapture.”<\/p>\n

While The Wrap<\/strong><\/em><\/a> called it “impressively odd,” The Times<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u00a0derided it as “messy, lifeless and derivative.”<\/p>\n

However, Empire<\/strong><\/em><\/a> magazine calls it “a genuinely original narrative.”\u00a0Deadline<\/em> praises<\/strong><\/a> it as a “brilliant musical return to a world of madness,” adding, “With song, dance, comedy, darkness, animation, drama, violence and more, this is a musical \u2014 if it even\u00a0is\u00a0<\/em>a musical \u2014 like no other.”<\/p>\n

Aside from the reviews and the standing ovation, the other Venice development was that Gaga and her fianc\u00e9,\u00a0Michael Polansky, <\/strong><\/a>made their red carpet debut<\/strong><\/a> at the event, with Gaga wearing a massive headpiece.<\/p>\n
