Elton John<\/strong>‘s\u00a0just been named <\/span>Time’s<\/span><\/em> <\/span>Icon of the Year<\/strong><\/span><\/a> for 2024.<\/span><\/p>\n

“TIME Icon of the Year – what an honour!” Elton writes on Instagram<\/strong><\/a>. “Reflecting on my journey – from the highs and lows of my early career to the peace and happiness of life now with my husband and two wonderful sons – I\u2019m reminded of the incredible support and love that have shaped my path. This accolade is a personal milestone and a reminder to the world that being yourself is truly iconic.”<\/p>\n

In the accompanying article,\u00a0\u00a0Elton\u2019s\u00a0writing partner,\u00a0lyricist Bernie Taupin<\/strong>, talks about how\u00a0in-demand\u00a0their music still is today.<\/p>\n

\u201cDo you know how many requests I get a day for the use of our songs on things like\u00a0<\/span>America\u2019s Got Talent<\/span><\/em>,\u00a0<\/span>The Voice<\/span><\/em>, or the silly show where they dress up as poodles?\u201d Taupin shares. \u201cI don\u2019t think Bob Dylan<\/strong> gets a lot of requests for\u00a0<\/span>The Masked Singer<\/span><\/em>.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n

And Elton reflects on his legacy,\u00a0saying it would be enough \u201cif people remember that we tried to change the world a little bit, we were kind, we tried to help people. And then, apart from that, there was the music.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

On a totally different subject, in the interview, Elton, who’s battled drug addiction in the past, shares his thoughts on the legalization of marijuana \u2014 and he\u2019s not for it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI maintain that it\u2019s addictive. It leads to other drugs,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd when you\u2019re stoned\u2014and I\u2019ve been stoned\u2014you don\u2019t think normally. Legalizing marijuana in America and Canada is one of the greatest mistakes of all time.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
