Ed Sheeran<\/strong>, Dua Lipa<\/strong> and Elton John\u00a0<\/strong>are among the artists who\u2019ve signed an open letter published in The Times<\/em><\/a>\u00a0<\/em>calling out plans to change U.K. copyright laws to benefit AI companies.<\/p>\n

The letter<\/a>\u00a0contends\u00a0that the planned changes \u201crepresent a wholesale giveaway of rights and income from the U.K. creative sectors to big tech.\u201d As\u00a0The Times\u00a0<\/em>notes, the changes would allow these companies to \u201cuse copyrighted works to train their AI software without permission unless the owner opts out.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other artists who\u2019ve signed the letter include\u00a0Sting<\/strong>,\u00a0Duran Duran<\/strong>\u2019s\u00a0Simon Le Bon<\/strong>, Paul McCartney<\/strong> and Kate Bush<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Along with the letter, a group of 1,000 musicians have released a silent album to Spotify, titled\u00a0Is This What We Want?<\/em><\/a>, in protest of the possible AI changes.<\/p>\n

The album, credited to “1,000 U.K. artists,” features 12 tracks with recordings of sound from empty studios and venues. It represents what the artists believe could happen if the copyright changes go through. The titles of the 12 songs spell out a message that reads, \u201cThe British government must not legalise music theft to benefit AI companies.\u201d<\/p>\n

Artists lending their name to the album include Kate, Billy Ocean<\/strong>, Annie Lennox<\/strong>, the artist formerly known as Cat Stevens\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Pet Shop Boys<\/strong>. Kate\u00a0wrote<\/a>\u00a0on her website, “If these changes go ahead, the life\u2019s work of all the country\u2019s musicians will be handed over to AI companies for free. None of us have a say in it.”<\/span><\/p>\n

She continues, “Please help protect the music makers and our heartfelt work. We make it for you, not for it to be taken and used against us.\u00a0In the music of the future, will our voices go unheard?”<\/span><\/p>\n

Proceeds from the album will be donated to the charity Help Musicians.<\/p>\n
