{"id":108363,"date":"2025-01-02T18:03:51","date_gmt":"2025-01-02T18:03:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/newstalklc\/commerce-department-seeks-to-potentially-restrict-or-ban-drones-from-china\/"},"modified":"2025-01-02T18:03:51","modified_gmt":"2025-01-02T18:03:51","slug":"commerce-department-seeks-to-potentially-restrict-or-ban-drones-from-china","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lascrucestoday.com\/newstalklc\/commerce-department-seeks-to-potentially-restrict-or-ban-drones-from-china\/","title":{"rendered":"Commerce Department seeks to potentially restrict or ban drones from China"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/syndication.abcaudio.com\/files\/2025-01-02\/GETTYRF_11824_Drone.jpg\" alt><figcaption>Richard Newstead\/Getty Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">(WASHINGTON) &#8212; <\/span>The Commerce Department on Thursday announced its intent to explore proposing a rule to secure the technology and supply chain of drones from foreign adversaries, including the potential ability of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/taiwan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">China<\/a>\u00a0and Russia to remotely access and manipulate the devices.<\/p>\n<p>The department&#8217;s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), seeks to implement a rule that would explain how foreign adversary involvement in &#8220;supply chains, including acute threats from China and Russia &#8212; may offer our adversaries the ability to remotely access and manipulate these devices, exposing sensitive U.S. data,&#8221; according to a department news release.<\/p>\n<p>If implemented, the rule would restrict or even ban drones from China &#8212; the source of most of the commercial drones sold in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>BIS is hoping to get feedback on how information from drones is used and how it could pose a national security risk from adversaries, according to the Commerce Department.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Securing the unmanned aircraft systems technology supply chain is critical to safeguarding our national security. This [rule making notice] is an essential step in protecting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/us-military\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">United States<\/a>\u00a0from vulnerabilities posed by foreign entities,&#8221; said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.<\/p>\n<p>The deadline for public comments on this rule is March 4, 2025.<\/p>\n<p>It is the latest step in rulemaking from the Commerce Department.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, BIS proposed a rule to ban Chinese software in cars from entering into the United States due to national security risks.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright \u00a9 2025, ABC Audio.
