Deen survived poverty and oppression in his native Jerusalem as a child, before finding kinship in the gang life on the mean streets of his new home in Chicago.  From a violent home life and street life to prison, Umad rediscovered Islam and found a calling in outreach work with at risk youth involved in the gang life he left.
