Suspect in Domestic, SWAT Callout, Charged with Multiple Crimes

Press Release from the City of Las Cruces -The 36-year-old man believed to be responsible for Wednesday’s domestic incident on Dona Ana Road and the SWAT callout on Yuma Street was taken into custody and now faces at least three felony charges.

Leo Leroy Robledo, 36, of the 2230 Dona Ana Rd., is charged with felony counts of unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, breaking and entering, and criminal damage to property. He faces seven misdemeanor charges including battery on a household member, assault against a household member, assault against a peace officer, criminal damage to property, and resisting or evading a peace officer.

The incident began Wednesday morning as a domestic between Robledo and a relative on the 2200 block of Dona Ana Road. Las Cruces police were dispatched to the call about 8:40 a.m. and attempted to make contact with Robledo who fled from officers and entered into a neighbor’s Ford F150 pickup. Robledo managed to start the pickup and backed into a marked, unoccupied Las Cruces police unit causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

Investigators learned Robledo drove north on Dona Ana Road with a marked unit in pursuit. The officer performed a PIT maneuver on the pickup, temporarily disabling it in an open field. Robledo was able to drive the vehicle out of the field and headed north at a high rate of speed on Dona Ana Road. For safety reasons, police broke off the pursuit.

A short while later, a Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office deputy located the stolen pickup on the 5000 block of Yuma Street. A nearby home was discovered to have been broken into and police confirmed the house belongs to an acquaintance of Robledo. Police also confirmed that Robledo was not permitted to be in the house.

Officers surrounded the home and made multiple announcements for Robledo to voluntarily exit. The multiple attempts were ignored. A multi-agency SWAT team was activated and introduced robots and pepper gas into the home. Robledo continued to refuse to comply with officers. About 1:20 p.m. Robledo was subdued by a Las Cruces police K-9 unit and taken into custody.

Robledo was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries he sustained during the incident. Upon release, he’ll be booked into the Dona Ana County Detention Center where he will initially be held without bond.
