Jocelyn Tallent-Burleson scored twice in the first half as the New Mexico State women’s soccer team cruised to a 4-0 win in an exhibition match against University of the Southwest on Thursday afternoon at the NM State Soccer Athletic Complex. NM State gave up just one shot on the afternoon.

The Aggies got on the board early when Shea O’Connor played a cross from the right side of the box into Corey Kizer who headed it in to put NM State ahead 1-0 in the 16th minute. NM State kept the pressure on and had good looks from O’Connor, Hannah Leitner and Megan Ormson but failed convert.

Then, in the 42nd minute, freshman Kaitlynn Melton found a streaking Tallent-Burleson who put away the Aggies’ second goal of the match. Less than a minute later, Cindy Alvarez played a ball over the top from the backline, again finding Tallent-Burleson who buried her second goal of the match to give NM State the 3-0 lead heading into the break.

The Aggie offense came out of the break on the attack but Katie Martinez’s shot in the 58th minute was cleared off the line by a Mustang defender to keep it 3-0 Aggies. Then, O’Connor almost put away NM State’s fourth goal but her shot hit off the post.

Finally, the Aggie offense came through again in the 88th minute when O’Connor’s cross found the right foot of El Paso native Bianca Chacon who finished upper 90 for the final tally of 4-0.

In all, NM State finished with 22 shots and 13 shots on goal while allowing just a single shot from the Mustangs.

The Aggies get the regular season underway with a non-conference match against Abilene Christian under the lights on Thursday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. (MT). This is the first Aggie night match since the 2011 season.
