This Weekend “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans” at Veterans Park

Las Cruces, NM – March 22, 2023 – Veterans Memorial Park in Las Cruces, NM, will host the 11th Annual Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans event on March 25, 2023, starting at 8 am. The event is an opportunity for Vietnam Veterans and Vietnam ERA Veterans to come together and welcome each other home, while also giving the Las Cruces community a chance to show their appreciation for their service and sacrifice.

The event will begin with the raising of the Garrison Flag at 8 am, followed by an invocation by Larry Orvis at 8:30 am. The Marine Corps League will present the colors, and there will be a recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and singing of the National Anthem. The names of the 398 Vietnam Veterans from New Mexico who lost their lives in Vietnam will also be read out loud.
The day’s events will continue with a wreath-laying ceremony by the White Sands CSM and the Director of the El Paso VA, followed by a firing of volley and playing of TAPS at 9:20 am. Several distinguished speakers will also address the crowd, including Las Cruces Mayor Ken Miiyagishima, representatives from the New Mexico Department of Veterans Services, the Parks and Recreation department, and the new Director of the El Paso VA. Additionally, CMS Jose G. Melendez, White Sands Missile Range CSM, will speak on better relations between WSMR and Las Cruces Veterans.
Attendees will be treated to hamburgers and hot dogs courtesy of Andele’s Restaurant for lunch, after which they can visit with Vietnam Veterans, organizations, and the Vet Center RV until 2 pm. The event will conclude with the lowering of the Garrison Flag at 5 pm.
