Doña Ana County Commissioners Approve Disaster Declaration Following Widespread Flooding

LAS CRUCES – The Doña Ana County Board of Commissioners has unanimously approved a disaster declaration following widespread flooding caused by heavy rainfall across the county on Tuesday, September 29.

The declaration was approved during a special meeting and signed Tuesday, October 6.

According to Doña Ana County, the declaration provides additional tools for response and recovery efforts, including the ability to access additional resources and request assistance from the state as needed. It also allows the county to provide financial assistance to individuals impacted by the flooding.

“This disaster declaration gives the County additional tools and resources to respond to the needs of our residents,” Board Chair Manuel Sanchez said. “We will continue working together with our community, our partners and the state to ensure residents have the support they need as we continue to move forward.”

County officials say that while the immediate safety threat has passed, many residents are still dealing with the effects of the flooding.

Residents who experienced flood-related damage are encouraged to complete the county’s damage assessment form at DonaAna.gov/DamageAssessment or call 211.

Residents who need assistance completing the damage assessment can also call 211. Assistance is available Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

“While the immediate safety threat has passed, we know many residents are still feeling the effects of this flooding. Our focus is on helping our communities recover,” Amanda Bowen said. “We are committed to supporting our residents throughout the recovery process, by assessing damages and connecting them to resources and assistance they need.”
