Doña Ana Community College (DACC) has partnered with New Mexico State University (NMSU) to develop a state-of-the-art system that will grow plants fast and more efficient.
DACC’s lead faculty member Kevin Gall, with Building Construction Technology, partnered with NMSU to design and construct a hydroponic system for plants. The system sits inside a modified container unit and is designed to grow plants without soil by delivering mineral nutrient solutions through an irrigation system. The container is being relocated to the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum where it will undergo continued experimentation, research and be used for educational demonstrations.
Using this new plant system container, plant roots are suspended directly in nutrient-rich water supported by an inert growing machine. This method promotes faster and more efficient growth in plants. DACC students also assisted in the process by adding shelving units to accommodate plant production.
“This container is the future, it will allow for a more controlled-environment in the region’s agriculture,” says Kevin Gall. “Not only does it allow us to control the habitat, but allows for sustainable growing practices.”
