Several Las Cruces middle school students opened their minds and their stomachs to learn about Doña Ana Community College (DACC)’s Culinary Arts Program this week.
The students from Las Cruces Catholic School (LCCS) are enrolled in a culinary course and spent the afternoon on Wednesday, December 17th to learn about the Culinary Arts Program offered at DACC. The college and LCCS have partnered in the past to offer guidance, experience and culinary skills to interested future chefs.
DACC Chef Tom Drake and LCCS Culinary Arts Instructor Frankie Torres showed the students how to make Cubano paninis in DACC’s industrial kitchen. The students were also given the experience of being on the television in DACC’s demonstration lab space which is used to give a closer look at how meals are prepared.
“We’re always honored to show young students what it takes to prepare a proper meal in a state-of-the-art, commercial-sized kitchen,” says Chef Drake. “These students may be interested in pathways in high school that will lead them here to DACC once they graduate.”
DACC’s Culinary Program is a competitive and limited program. Prospective students must complete preliminary courses to be considered for admission. For more information on the program, go to Culinary Arts.
