A Las Cruces police officer helped prevent a potential tragedy after noticing smoke coming from a single-story residence while driving in the area of Evans Drive early Thursday morning.

The police officer knocked on the door of a home on the 1300 block of Evans Drive and awakened the lone resident just after 12:45 a.m. this morning, Thursday, January 22, 2206, alerting him that his home was on fire.

Las Cruces firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke throughout the residence and a well-involved attic fire. Crews brought the fire under control within 10 minutes.

The American Red Cross was dispatched to assist the displaced resident. No injuries were reported.  The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
