LAS CRUCES – A fatal road rage shooting in Albuquerque is drawing attention across southern New Mexico as law enforcement officials continue investigating the incident that left a young man dead earlier this week.
According to a report on KOB-TV, Albuquerque police identified 31-year-old Cecilio Lopez as the suspect accused of shooting 19-year-old Roman Valenciano during a confrontation on the roadway. Police said Valenciano was traveling to pick up his mother after work when the encounter escalated, resulting in gunfire that killed him at the scene.
Authorities said surveillance footage showed the suspect driving a Mustang and engaging in aggressive driving behavior before the shooting. Officers later located a vehicle matching the description returning to the scene multiple times, which helped lead investigators to the suspect.
Police also confirmed the suspect was on probation for a previous felony conviction and had prior involvement with the criminal justice system dating back to his teenage years, including a murder charge filed in 2012 that was later dismissed. Lopez now faces an open count of murder along with other related charges. All persons mentioned in this report are to be considered innocent until possibly proven guilty by a court of law.
