ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Housing New Mexico – also known as New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority or MFA – will work side-by-side with the City of Albuquerque and the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness on the newly launched Landlord Engagement Program. The initiative intends to increase affordable housing opportunities for New Mexico residents, while providing essential support and funding to landlords.

The Landlord Engagement Program covers damages above security deposits for landlords of housing voucher recipients issued by the City of Albuquerque. As the fiscal agent for the Landlord Engagement Program, Housing New Mexico will oversee the administration of City of Albuquerque general funds for landlord claims, including receiving, processing and disbursing claims to participating landlords.

“Housing New Mexico is proud to be a part of the City of Albuquerque’s Landlord Engagement Program,” said Kellie Tillerson, Housing New Mexico Director of Community Development. “By partnering with the City of Albuquerque and the New Mexico Coalition to End Homelessness, we will foster better relationships between voucher holders and landlords throughout the city.”

Funds from the Landlord Engagement Program may be used to cover costs such as:

  • Claims for damage to rental unit(s)
  • Claims for lost rent (vacancy loss)
  • Claims for certain targeted upgrades
  • Claims to create housing stability

Housing New Mexico, otherwise known as New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority (MFA), was created in 1975 by the New Mexico State Legislature to provide quality affordable housing opportunities for all New Mexico residents. As the state’s housing authority, New Mexico Mortgage Finance Authority/Housing New Mexico uses housing bonds, tax credits and other federal, state and private resources to fund more than 40 housing programs. In addition to funding the construction and rehabilitation of affordable housing and rental properties, Housing New Mexico’s programs include down payment assistance, homelessness prevention and emergency shelter, weatherization services, rental assistance and housing for people with special needs which has provided over 500,000 families with affordable housing and services since its inception.
