LAS CRUCES — Student designers at New Mexico State University are turning recycled materials into runway-ready looks as part of this year’s Aggie Fashion Week, highlighting creativity, sustainability and personal expression through original designs.
The weeklong celebration will culminate in the annual Sustainable Fashion Show at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 23, in Aggie Lounge at the Corbett Center Student Union. The free public event will feature student-designed collections inspired by this year’s theme, “Reimagine,” with garments created from repurposed and recycled materials.
Organizers say the showcase demonstrates how fashion can combine innovation and environmental awareness while giving students the opportunity to present their work to the community. The event is open to the public and designed to celebrate both artistic expression and responsible design practices.
Aggie Fashion Week will begin with a kickoff event at 6 p.m. Monday, April 20, featuring guest speaker Nevena Christi, owner of Rocketbuster Boots. Christi’s custom designs have been worn by artists including Reba McEntire, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar and Ángela Aguilar. During the kickoff, Christi is expected to share insights into her design career and discuss the craftsmanship behind handcrafted western footwear.
University officials encourage community members to attend the events throughout the week and support student designers as they showcase their work and explore new approaches to sustainable fashion.
