LAS CRUCES — The Bureau of Land Management’s Las Cruces District is reminding visitors to use caution on public lands as Southern New Mexico enters the rainy season.
BLM officials say flooding and heavy rain can cause severe erosion, leaving some roads and areas impassable. Wet and muddy roads can also create hazardous driving conditions.
Visitors are urged not to continue using a road if their vehicle is creating ruts deeper than six inches. Driving off established roads to get around muddy conditions can damage natural and cultural resources managed by the BLM.
The agency also encourages visitors to know their escape routes, learn about the terrain before heading out, and let someone know where they are going and when they expect to return.
