COLUMBUS, NM – Construction continues along the U.S.-Mexico border west of the Columbus Port of Entry as federal crews work on what U.S. Customs and Border Protection describes as part of an expanded border barrier system in southern New Mexico.
According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection planning documents, current projects in portions of southern New Mexico include construction of primary and, where operationally appropriate, secondary border barriers, along with patrol roads, lighting, drainage improvements, gates and surveillance infrastructure.
Recent construction activity observed near Columbus includes grading work, installation of concrete foundations and underground conduit, and additional work along the existing border barrier. In recent weeks, some previously installed lighting infrastructure and buried conduit have also been removed. Federal officials have not publicly explained the construction changes.
The work is part of a broader federal border security initiative. In 2025, the Department of Homeland Security announced actions to accelerate border infrastructure projects in portions of Arizona and New Mexico, while Congress approved funding for additional border barrier construction and related security infrastructure.
Federal planning documents indicate border projects may include lighting systems, cameras, sensors and improved access roads in addition to steel barriers.
Construction remains ongoing in the Columbus area, and no completion date has been announced for the local project.
