LAS CRUCES — The City of Las Cruces will receive $125,000 in state funding to renovate and expand the surgical suite at the Animal Services Center of the Mesilla Valley.
The award is part of nearly $2 million being distributed to 17 animal shelters across New Mexico through the New Mexico Animal Welfare Program. The program is administered by the New Mexico Department of Finance and Administration.
According to the state, the funding supports construction, renovations and equipment purchases intended to improve the care and sheltering of domestic cats and dogs.
Other projects receiving funding include new kennels, heating and cooling systems, quarantine facilities, drainage improvements, fencing and expanded animal-housing areas.
Nearby recipients include the City of Bayard, which was awarded $290,600 for kennel construction and other facility improvements, and Sierra County, which will receive $75,000 for additional kennels, animal runs and shade structures.
