LAS CRUCES – Las Cruces police arrested Jeremiah Angel Castillo, 18, in connection with a shooting Friday afternoon that injured a 36-year-old man.
Police responded at approximately 2:50 p.m. to reports of two men firing at one another near Idaho Avenue and Luna Street. Officers found several spent shell casings at the scene and located a man suffering from gunshot wounds. He was transported to a hospital for treatment. His current condition was not released.
During the follow-up investigation, officers located and recovered a vehicle believed to have been involved in the shooting on South Main Street.
Castillo is charged with aggravated battery, two counts of aggravated assault and tampering with evidence. Court records indicate that he is being held without bond at the Doña Ana County Detention Center.
Several people were initially detained as officers investigated the shooting.
Lynn Middle School was temporarily placed under a shelter-in-place order as a precaution. The order was later lifted. The intersection of Luna Street and Idaho Avenue was also temporarily closed during the investigation.
