LAS CRUCES – The Las Cruces Police Department has introduced an online portal showing how it uses Flock Safety license plate reader cameras, along with a video addressing questions about the technology and privacy.
The Flock Camera Transparency Portal lists the number of cameras in Las Cruces, searches conducted during the previous 30 days and alerts generated when a vehicle matches a hotlist. According to the department, those lists include vehicles entered into the National Crime Information Center and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Police Chief Jeremy Story said residents should pay attention to how new technology affects privacy. He said the video explains how officers use the cameras and responds to what he described as inaccurate information about the system.
LCPD says it retains Flock camera data for 30 days before the data is automatically removed from the system’s cache. The portal also explains what the cameras can and cannot detect and provides the department’s acceptable-use policy, including prohibited uses.
