LAS CRUCES – The City of Las Cruces is inviting residents, businesses and other community members to a public meeting next month on plans for a new pedestrian crossing and traffic signal along West Amador Avenue.
The Public Works Department will hold a Public Input Meeting for the Amador Crossing HAWK Signal Project from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday, September 3, at Las Cruces City Hall, 700 N. Main Street. The meeting will be held in second-floor conference rooms 2007B and 2007C.
The project calls for installation of a new High Intensity Activated Crosswalk, commonly known as a HAWK signal, on West Amador Avenue at the Armijo Lateral.
Unlike a conventional traffic signal, a HAWK signal is activated when a pedestrian needs to cross the roadway. The system is designed to stop vehicle traffic and provide pedestrians with a protected crossing point across multiple traffic lanes.
Additional improvements planned for the area include new raised medians, signage, pavement striping, curb ramps and street lighting.
City officials say the improvements are intended to provide pedestrians with a safer crossing while addressing busy vehicle traffic along West Amador Avenue.
City staff will be available during the September 3 meeting to explain the project and answer questions from the public.
