LAS CRUCES – The City of Las Cruces is asking residents, businesses, commuters and community organizations to help shape a new Transportation Safety Action Plan aimed at reducing traffic fatalities and serious injuries.
The plan is funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Safe Streets and Roads for All program. City officials say it will use public feedback, crash data, roadway conditions and other technical information to identify safety priorities and recommend future improvements for people who walk, bike, roll, drive or use public transportation.
As part of the effort, the City will update its proposed bikeway and trail networks. Officials say improved networks can strengthen safety and connectivity, particularly for bicyclists who are more vulnerable to severe injuries in traffic crashes.
A virtual community meeting is scheduled from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 18, through Zoom. An in-person open house will follow from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, August 25, at the Las Cruces Regional Aquatic Center, 1401 East Hadley Avenue.
Additional pop-up feedback events are planned at NMSU’s Corbett Center Student Union, Las Cruces City Hall, Thomas Branigan Memorial Library, the Doña Ana County Government Center, the Las Cruces Farmers and Crafts Market on September 12, and National Night Out at the Las Cruces Plaza on October 6.
