ALBUQUERQUE – A 58-year-old Albuquerque man has been charged following a fatal motorcycle crash late Saturday night on Interstate 25 in Albuquerque.

According to the New Mexico State Police, officers were asked by the Albuquerque Police Department to investigate the crash shortly before midnight on June 6 near Comanche Road on northbound Interstate 25.

Investigators said a motorcycle operated by 24-year-old Keegan Thomas was traveling northbound when it was struck from behind by a 2013 BMW. The impact ejected Thomas from the motorcycle. Several civilians stopped to render aid until emergency crews arrived. Thomas was transported to a local hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

State Police located the BMW nearby with significant damage consistent with the collision. The driver was identified as Danny Sanchez, 58.

The preliminary investigation indicates both vehicles were traveling northbound when the BMW struck the motorcycle. After the collision, investigators say the BMW continued traveling until Sanchez realized the vehicle could no longer operate and pulled onto the shoulder.

Sanchez was arrested and charged with homicide by vehicle, aggravated DWI, and careless driving. Investigators believe alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the New Mexico State Police with assistance from the agency’s Vehicular Crimes Unit.

All persons charged with a crime are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
